About Gridland

Safe ground is something you build before you need it.

Gridland Consulting is the advisory practice of Griðland ehf, established in Iceland in 2003. The Icelandic word griðland means a sanctuary, a place of safety. That is what we try to offer leaders facing hard decisions about artificial intelligence: a place to think clearly, hear the truth, and decide well.

What we believe

AI does not replace leaders. It exposes them.

Artificial intelligence amplifies whatever it meets. Where strategy is clear, governance is real, and people are trusted, it compounds strength. Where those things are thin, it exposes the gaps faster than any audit could. That is why we treat AI readiness as a leadership question first and a technology question second.

Resilience is a strategic advantage, and it is built in advance. The institutions that come through disruption well are rarely the ones with the most advanced tools. They are the ones whose leaders were willing to look honestly at where they stood, and to act with composed courage on what they saw.

The founder

Gísli Rafn Ólafsson

For three decades Gísli has worked where technology meets pressure: in the technology industry, in the field during some of the hardest humanitarian emergencies of the century, in Iceland’s parliament, and at the head of a national humanitarian organization. Each role taught the same lesson from a different angle. Pressure does not build character in an institution. It reveals it.

How we practice

Four principles

Independent

We do not sell technology, and we are not paid by those who do.

Honest

An assessment is useful only if it is true. We report what we find, including disagreement.

Responsible

Leadership is responsibility rather than authority. We advise accordingly, with people and trust at the center.

Selective

When the fit is not right, we say so, and we decline the work.
